Facebook

The recent increase in social media popularity and the explosion of Facebook has created a new environment that is affecting every industry, from construction to entertainment to EMS.

Although at first glance it may be difficult to see how EMS agencies can benefit from Facebook, here are a few key points to consider:

  • Facebook provides an opportunity to connect with your community and build strong relationships within

  • Facebook makes it easier to share information, including safety tips, accident prevention information, job postings, open houses, first aid and other training courses, and much more

  • Facebook cements your position as an authority figure by building fans and a community following

  • Facebook provides another means of communication, which can handle non- emergencies, thus potentially freeing up key staff to deal with 911 calls and other emergencies

Even Commerx is on Facebook!  Check out the screen shot below for a quick glance at our profile, and if you’re interested, join our fan group by clicking here.

Picture this: it’s the first half of the 20th century – and you go into cardiac arrest.  Your chances of survival are so low no one expects you to make it.

Fast forward to 1960, and everything changes: Peter Safar combines artificial respiration with chest compressions, and invents Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – what we now know as CPR.

2010 is the official 50 year anniversary of the invention of CPR.  In celebration, here is a brief CPR timeline:

•    1903: first successful use of external chest compressions in human resuscitation

•    1956: mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is invented

•    1960: CPR is invented

•    1972: first mass training of CPR

•    1981: 911 emergency dispatchers provide telephone instructions to bystanders on performing CPR
